A model for sustainable Swedish farming of Arctic charr

This project proposal aim to test a Swedish model for sustainable farming of Arctic charr with a natural freshwater fatty acid profile and to evaluate the interaction of diet and genotype as the selected strain used for farming have been fed with a marine fatty acid profile for several generations. Arctic charr is mainly a freshwater species that naturally have lower levels of the marine long-chained fatty acids why the composition of commercial diets based on marine fish oils is not natural to the species. Therefore this species may be suited for feeds with inclusion of vegetable oils and consequently a lower demand of marine fish oils than i.e. in salmon feed. We have tested total replacement of fish meal by mussel meal and partial replacement by microorganisms, as well as rapeseed oil (RO) instead of fish oil in short term feeding trials on Arctic charr without any reduction in growth. The flesh of the charr fed with RO did have an expected reduction of long chain n-3 fatty acids. In this proposal we aim to test feeding models during a full on-growing phase using as little marine fish oil and fish meal as possible but still produce a high quality product. By formulating a feed based on a significant substitution with alternative ingredients, Arctic charr can be farmed with a true sustainability label. We will compare charr of wild with the selected genotype of several full-sib families in order to evaluate the consequences of and for breeding work.
